Spikes Takeo is one of only 7 linebackers to achieve more than 200 career starts with the NFL. 13 out of his 15 he was team captain seasons of play. Takeo Spikes has the distinction of playing in 219 regular season games without a playoff appearance.
Shortly after Jimmie and Lillie Spikes’ birth of their son, on December 17, 1976 in Augusta, Ga., Lillie suggested they call him Junior, but her husband was against the idea because he wanted his son to still have his own identity. While Lillie surfed the television channels in her room at hospital, she happened upon a news story about Japanese Prime Minister Miki Takeo.
“Takeo Spikes,’’ she thought to herself. “Hmmm…’’
“My Takeo will be my great warrior,’’ she thought, while gazing at her new-born.
In the next 30 years, Takeo Spikes clearly did live up to his name’s translation.
Being the author of more than 1,000 tackles, the 6-foot-2, 242-pound Takeo Spikes has earned the respect of his teammates, opponents and also coaches, for his team-first attitude, fierce dedication, superb athletic skills and his ability to persevere through serious injuries.
